Standing in the middle of the Forum Ruins, E943,1

Explanation

  • Bartolomeo Pinelli is a modern-day spectator looking upon the cultural heritage of Rome, surrounded by the famous ruins of the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum, where a procession of monks can be seen. The text on the title page also informs us that the goddess Roma stands before him in all her majestic glory and dignity. Roma is unarmed, but wears a helmet and carries a shield. The motif adorning the shield, showing a wolf with two children, is a representation of the myth of King Romulus and his brother Remus, whom tradition proclaims the founders of Rome. The brothers were abandoned to their deaths in the river Tiber, but saved their lives by suckling a wolf. Throughout most of his career Bartolomeo Pinelli was associated with the same art academy as Thorvaldsen; Accademia di San Lucca in Rome.
