Explanation

  • Among the pictures decorating the rooms in the Villa Borghese, Thorvaldsen also found Vincenzo Berrettini’s interpretation of Jupiter in the figure of an eagle carrying off Ganymede. The literary source for this was Ovid. Thorvaldsen subsequently returned repeatedly to these two figures, in both drawings, reliefs and works of sculpture.
