Explanation

  • This scene comes from Homer’s Iliad, Book 6, verses 399- 493, where the brave Trojan Prince Hector takes leave of his small son Astyanax and his wife Andromache in order to go to war against the Greeks who have besieged Troy. His wife is standing on his left, and the little family is flanked on one side by the nursemaid who has brought the child to his father, and on the other by a warrior who has come to accompany Hector to the theatre of war. Hector is not to see his family again. He is killed in the battles that follow.
