Joseph II (1741 – 1790) and his brother Leopold (1747 – 1792) are shown with a statue of the goddess Roma and a map of the city of Rome on the desk before them. The picture also offers a view of Castel San’ Angelo and St. Peter’s Basilica – two of the iconic monuments of Rome. Joseph II was crowned Holy Roman Emperor as head of the German-Roman realm in March of 1765.
