Explanation
- Floronia (c. 240 – 216 BC), a Vestal Virgin at the Roman temple of Vesta, was accused of debauchery and sentenced to be buried alive. The aquatint was executed for Alessandro Verri’s (1741-1816) book Notti Romane al sepolcro degli Scipioni, published as two volumes in 1792 and 1804.
