A storm carried Aeneas from Carthage to Sicily. Aeneas’ mother, Venus, asked Neptune, god of the sea, for fair weather when Aeneas continued his journey to the Italian mainland.
When he arrived at Cumaea he visited the underworld, guided by the Cumaean Sibyl. There Aeaneas saw Dido again. Dido, the queen of Carthage, had thrown herself onto a pyre when she saw Aeneas’ fleet leaving. (See the engraving by Giovanni Balestra, inv.no. E352) Yet in the realm of the dead she only had eyes for her husband, who had died an early death before her.
