Carlo Labruzzi was part of Thorvaldsen’s circle in Rome. In the autumn of 1789 Labruzzi painted 226 monochrome watercolors on via Appia Antica while he accompanied the wealthy British gentleman and archaeologist Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838). Sir Richard was a great admirer of the Roman poet Horace (75 – 8 f.Kr.) and travelled in the footsteps of Horace.
In Satires 1.5 Horace describes a journey where he accompanies Emperor Augustus (emperor 31 – 14 BC) to an East-West summit in Brindisi in south-eastern Italy.
