Façade of Copenhagen City Hall and Courthouse, D826

Explanation

  • C.F. Hansen was appointed senior city architect in 1808. After this, he was in charge of virtually all official building activity in Copenhagen and was also the architect responsible for Christiansborg Palace, the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and for the City Hall and Courthouse in Nytorv shown in the present picture. Thorvaldsen was commissioned to create sculptures for all three buildings. The best known, however, are undoubtedly his works in the Cathedral, which include his famous figure of Christ.
