Explanation

  • While Italy was occupied by the French under Napoleon, Pinelli spent some time with bands of robbers in the rural areas outside Rome. He used the impressions he gathered in a series of drawings and prints in which the appalling lives of the robbers are portrayed with some sympathy, or at least without any attempt at moralization.
