Leo XII, Carried in Corpus Christi Procession through the Colonnade in St Peter?s Square, D498

Explanation

  • Ferrari has portrayed the procession held on the great Catholic festival of Corpus Christi. It is on this day that the miracle of the Eucharist is celebrated, that is to say the changing of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Beneath a baldachin, the Pope is being borne along with the Sacrament through the colonnade on St Peter’s Square. It was a tradition that this solemn procession should be accompanied by others of ordinary people carrying banners and staging tableaux and dramas.
