Explanation

  • The designation of this genre of picture, Ecce Homo, refers to a specific event in the story of Christ’s suffering. When Christ had been scourged and crowned with thorns. He was shown to the multitude, and the Roman governor Pontius Pilate said “Ecce Homo” – “Behold the man” – referring to Christ. But no one asked for mercy. The answer from the high priests and the multitude was “Crucify him.”
