In terms of both motif and technique, this drawing is indebted to several of Thorvaldsen’s works from his earliest years in Rome, including copies he made of ancient works. A love of animals – also as a motif in reliefs and sculptures – was something he retained throughout his life. In addition to the large cats, various dogs, horses, birds, sheep etc. are to be found.
