Danish Artists in the Roman Osteria La Gensola, B199

Explanation

  • Thorvaldsen is here seen in a Roman hostelry, seated at the end of a well-laid table. On his right are the painters Ernst Meyer, Blunck himself in profile and Jørgen Sonne wearing a grey top hat. Just coming in through the door is Constantin Hansen, and at the other long side of the table, Gottlieb Bindesbøll – the architect of Thorvaldsens Museum – is turning to say something to the waiter. Wilhlem Marstrand is poking his head forward just behind Bindesbøll, and the artist drawing the scene on the left is Albert Küchler.
All the painters in the picture are represented with works in Thorvaldsen’s collection of paintings.
