Explanation
- Princess Caroline’s (1793-1881) low-cut Empire dress is drawn in beneath the breast by a belt, the fastener of which is decorated with medallions representing her parents. The princess, who was the living image of her father (Frederik VI), was at the age of 36 married to her cousin, the Hereditary Prince Ferdinand. Thorvaldsen has succeeded in giving the not particularly beautiful princess’s face a pompous framework.
