Explanation
- Despite his dual nature, half horse, half man, the centaur Chiron was a profoundly sympathetic and thoroughly cultured – indeed actually learned – creature. The god of medicine Aesculapius had derived his knowledge from Chiron, and the hero Achilles had been taught to play the lyre by him. In this relief, Chiron is teaching Achilles to throw a spear.
