Explanation

  • Prince Metternich (1773-1859) was the Austrian chancellor and foreign minister. During and after the Congress of Vienna, Metternich played a major role in the politics of the European great powers until 1848. Thorvaldsen has carved him as the ideal of a man of the world with the clearly defined face, the turn of the head and the dignified stance.
